Italian Bike Tours For Everyone
Out of all the Italy bicycle tours, this is one of the few that can be enjoyed by all. The scenic route goes along a combination of bike paths and roads with views of the valleys and churches along the way. Whether you want to bike the entire tour or just a portion, you have endless options with bike rental companies all over the place. The bicycle tour also runs along side a train so you can also do a one way trip if you prefer.
There are maps readily available in local tourist offices in the area.
When to Cycle
This Italy bike tour is most enjoyable from June to September. If possible, avoid biking on August 15 (Ferragosto holiday).
Getting To/From Bike Route
To get to San Candido from Bolzano, take a northbound train to Fortezza then hop onto another train to San Candido. It should cost about 10€ for the ride and an extra 4€ if you bring your own bike.
Cycling Route
The first part of the Italian bike tour, is on a paved road with traffic until you get out of town. After 1.4 km, you'll move onto a bike path where you can enjoy views of green fields, barns, and the Dolomite mountain tops.
Next, you'll pass Dobbiaco's train station and move west. This portion of the Italy bike tour offers more scenic views of streams, forests, chapels, and farmlands.
Beware of your bike tires when crossing under the railway at about 9.7km. After Monguelfo, you can enjoy another small trip to Lago di Braies, a beautiful lake back dropped with massive mountains.
Watch for signs to the bike path, just before Monguelfo at 16.9km. You'll continue to enjoy the river and forests. A crowded road will take you to Valdaora di Sopra after which you'll get back into the peaceful farm country.
At 27.3 km the road turns to dirt and your ride will be a little bumpy but only for about 1 km. The Italy bike tour continues on, giving you more views of farm lands filled with cows. The rest of the tour is smooth sailing back to Brunico.
